Is Apple planning to launch new iPad – Apple iPad Mini?

A month after Apple delivered its new 7.85-inch iPad, , rumors are heating up about a new iteration of the tablet designed to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire with a minimalist price tag.

The latest rumor to make the rounds is that Apple is planning to produce 6 million smaller iPads for sale some time in the third quarter somewhere near October.

Although far form confirmed, reports of an iPad Mini release have hit fever pitch in recent weeks with latest mutterings from the ever revolving Apple rumour mill suggesting this October’s expected iPhone 5 release could be partnered with the company’s first 7-inch tablet offering.

“Apple will be going forward with the 7-inch iPad, currently targeting an October 2012 release alongside the new iPhone, and — here’s the killer — at a $200 to $250 price point,” Apple blog iMore has reported.

“Our source has indicated, however, that the 7-inch iPad will be identical to the current 9.7-inch iPad, just scaled down. That seems to include a 2048×1536 resolution display, just like the new iPad. If accurate, that would put the pixel density at around 326 ppi, the same as the iPhone 4S (and higher than the 264 ppi new iPad) retina display.”

It’s believed Apple is launching the smaller slate, which is expected to hit shelves later this year, in a bid to fend off competition from the likes of Amazon and a batch of Windows 8 tablets that are also expected to be launching at around the same time.

With the current new iPad 3 maintaining the highly competitive £399 ($499 in the US) price tag as its predecessors, the touted $200 (£124) price tag attributed to the rumoured iPad Mini would see the device land as a direct competitor to the cheap as chips Amazon Kindle Fire. While nothing’s been confirmed yet, rumours suggest the upcoming Kindle Fire 2 will be having 7 and 9-inch versions of the device could wield a $249 and $299 price tag, respectively.
